ghosts of Brentford past

Tomorrow’s encounter with our west London neighbours brings forth long-held memories of our previous meeting spanning just under 30 years.

Following Orient’s relegation to the old 3rd division in 1982 one of our early fixtures in the division was the classic 3-3 draw at Brisbane Road on a balmy September afternoon.  Veteran left back, Bill Roffey, scored two absolute crackers to give Orient a 3-2 lead going into the final minute of the match, only for the visitors to level in dramatic fashion with the last kick of the game.

It was this type of drama that became the standard in regards to our meetings with the ‘bees’ for the next decade. The two classic encounters from the 91-2 season produced 13 goals in two electrifying  clashes with the infamous 4-2 game at Brisbane Road ending up in a tunnel brawl and so-called ‘top referee’, David Ellaray, showing the sort of bias towards Brentford that would have  been an embarrassment to  a Eurovision song contest vote.

Since those far away days honours have been just about even between the two clubs. The home side normally comes out on top when the two protagonists meet and this season Brentford produced a crushing 5-0 victory when we bathed in the August sunshine at Griffin park.

However, with Orient currently in free fall, you can’t help but feel the visitors will come away with all three points as the O’s struggle to find any sort of coherent attacking philosophy allied to a leaky back line with this weeks freshly recruited goalkeeper (the 7th to be ushered into the position this season!)

Prediction: Orient 0 Brentford 3 (ouch!)
